Four Ways to Include Your Spouse in Financial Planning

I am ashamed to say that my wife told me the other day that she doesnt know what a mutual fund is. This stemmed from a brief discussion about where to invest $1,000 that we had collected from our 8-year-old sons birthday and Christmas money. My wife is a big fan of certificates of deposit. They are her safety blanket, and all she knows about investing.

Of course, I was appalled. I was not only mortified at her investment choices but also at my own inability to educate her over the past ten years of marriage in the topics of my chosen profession.

I realized that part of my problem has been my poor communication skills. Like many couples in America, my wife and I are very different in the way that we think about, handle, and approach our personal finances. It starts to get even murkier when we discuss our combined efforts.

Debt Collection Agency Thwarted In Legal Battle

November - 18 - 2011 Author: Christine Allen Respond

Filed by an American collection agency, a lawsuit against forestry contractors local to Arrow Lakes has been temporarily put on hold by a Delaware judge. On January 20 a hearing was held in a U.S. court with PricewaterhouseCooper legal counsel attending via telephone conference.

Contractors came to court with concerns and the judge agreed that something should be done. The orders that are being given did not affect any of the Canadian entities, or at least they should not. The case was pretty much put on hold while mediators and lawyers tried to determine the best possible route for the lawsuit.

A spokesperson for the contractors says that she was notified of the lawsuit by mail, like a lot of others in the area. She claims that she has lined up her defense in case the proceedings continue, but she believes that the lawsuit is simply a last-ditch scheme to get cash.

The Minnesota-based legal collection agency asked the contractors business, Summit Lake Services for $19,000 for work finished three months before Pope and Talbots collapse.

Making Credit Cards more Efficient

November - 18 - 2011 Author: admin Respond

In recent years, credit cards have become much more efficient, both in terms of how you use them to make payments and how your balance is paid off. This article looks at some of the key developments that have helped cards with credit to become more efficient over time.

Chip and PIN

Probably one of the most familiar developments in credit cards is Chip and PIN technology. As well as being more secure than the old method of signing for your purchases, it also helps to speed up the process of paying for goods face to face. This technology is now available to use in the vast majority of retailers and so has certainly been a success.

Contactless payments

A more recent development is the idea of contactless payments. This is something that is becoming more popular and more retailers – and card providers – are starting to adopt the technology. Con Read more…

Unemployed Stung by BofA Fees on Benefits

November - 12 - 2011 Author: Christine Allen Respond

– Bank of America has retreated from plans to charge a monthly debit card fee, but some of the people who can least afford it are still being stung. In South Carolina, one of several states that have contracted with BofA to deliver unemployment benefits through debit cards instead of checks, out-of-work people are charged when they use their pre-paid cards at other banks’ ATMs—even if the nearest BofA machine is many miles away, the Huffington Post finds. One woman estimates that she has paid some $350 in fees. “It really boggles my mind,” she said. “This bank is taking little bits of money out of thousands of pockets, including mine.”

South Carolina is just one of 41 states where big banks have won contracts to deliver public benefits, typically through contracts that allow them to charge unlimited fees. The

November - 11 - 2011 Author: Samantha Davis Respond

LONDON Sinopec has agreed to invest almost $5.2 billion in the Brazilian operations of Portuguese energy company Galp Energia, the latest move in a global expansion by Chinas largest oil refiner.

Under the terms of the deal, state-owned Sinopec will invest $4.8 billion for a 30 percent stake in Petrogal Brasil, a subsidiary of Galp Energia in the fast-growing South American country. The Chinese company will make an additional loan to the Brazilian-based business for $390 million.

Galp Energia will retain the remaining 70 percent share of Petrogal Brasil. The deal values the company’s Brazilian assets at $12.5 billion.

China’s energy companies have spent billions of dollars in recent years to gain access to new energy resources. In October, Sinopec agreed to buy Daylight Energy, a Canadian oil and natural gas producer, for about $2.1 billion in cash. The
