Youre probably working through your holiday gift list about now, and you might be realizing that your budget is going to be pretty tight. How far would you go to stretch that budget?

Morgan Stanley to Cut 1,600 Jobs

December - 12 - 2011 Author: Samantha Davis Respond

Morgan Stanley plans to eliminate 1,600 jobs by the end of the first quarter of 2012, the firm said on Thursday.

As we conduct our year-end performance management process and evaluate the right size of the franchise for 2012, we anticipate the elimination of approximately 1,600 positions across the firm globally, Jeanmarie McFadden, a Morgan Stanley spokeswoman, said in a statement.

The reductions, which amount to about 2.6 percent of Morgan Stanleys global work force, are expected to come across all job levels in all divisions, including investment banking, trading and support functions, according to a person with knowledge of the plans.

The 17,000 financial advisers in the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney unit are not expected to be affected by the cuts, the person said, though other employees in the unit may be laid off.

It has been a rough year for investment banks, many of which have been shedding thousands of jobs in an attempt to cut costs or stave off losses.

CalSTRS policy calls for political transparency

December - 9 - 2011 Author: Elizabeth Moore Respond

US – The California State Teachers’ Retirement System has adopted a policy which puts pressure on company management teams to disclose their political contributions.

At an investment committee meeting on 3 November, the CalSTRS board approved a policy that calls for directors of companies within the pension fund’s portfolio to require management to disclose political expenditure.

The policy was adopted after the state treasurer Bill Lockyer, who holds a seat on the CalSTRS board, asked the investment committee to consider the move in May.

Lockyer said: “This policy will ensure corporations’ political contributions serve the interests of companies and shareholders.”

CalSTRS investment committee chair Harry Keiley added: “Transparency in this area has been a longstanding concern for CalSTRS and remains a key part of our ongoing efforts to elicit more disclosure and accountability from the boards of our portfolio companies.

“Interest and support for these practices also has been steadily growing.
