— Gas pump prices in Corpus Christi jumped 5.7 cents per gallon in the past week, nearly double the three-cent national average increase, according to the gasoline price website CorpusChristiGasPrices.com.

The average gas pump price in Corpus Christi was $3.53 per gallon, nearly one dollar more than a year ago. The national average is $3.67 per gallon, one cent less than a month ago.

A Pennsylvania couple has started a business to supplement companys safety trainings with rattlesnake specific information:

Bob Zumstein has been lecturing on timber rattlesnakes for years and recently had been invited to talk to two Marcellus Shale companies about where workers might encounter these venomous suckers and what they should do if they spot one.

This gave Lisa Olszak, Zumstein’s wife, an idea for a business.

Olszak owns a management consulting business in Pittsburgh, where she spends her weekdays while traveling back to the couple’s home in Bradford on weekends — driving along the footprint of the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania. With her business wheels always spinning, she said, Olszak saw a timber rattlesnake-shaped hole in companies’ safety trainings that she would like to fill.

NEWPORT – Aquidneck Island communities foresee forming a special commission to redevelop former Navy land.

In a 5-0 vote on July 14, the tri-community Aquidneck Island Reuse Planning Authority adopted its preferred development scenario that now heads to the Department of Defense for review.

The authority will submit a formal document to the Navy by Aug. 19. It expects a decision in mid-October, said Julie Oakley, the authority’s property reuse coordinator.

The authority envisions turning a swath of land in Middletown into a park. Mixed-use development would occur on the other properties including the former Naval Hospital in Newport, the site of the former Navy Lodge in Middletown and two adjacent tank farms in Portsmouth.

The reuse authority suggested that a commission receive, at a discount, all the land except that being set aside for the park. It would then market the land and help developers through the municipal approvals process.
