Kenya: Interbank Borrowing Rate at 26% Unacceptable

August - 24 - 2011 Author: Samantha Davis Respond

An interbank borrowing rate of 26 percent in Kenya is unacceptable, a senior Treasury official said on Friday, and staff from the ministry of finance and the central bank are working on a plan to deal with interest rates while supporting the shilling currency.

“The interbank rate has gone up pretty high. That is not good for the economy because it means interest rates can rise sharply. At 26 percent, that is unacceptable,” Geoffrey Mwau, economic secretary at the Treasury, told Reuters.

“We have our staff now working on recommendations that we will look at by Monday, Tuesday. Whatever we come up with, we implement. There are actions we can actually take to bring the (exchange) rate down. After our staff meet, those are the things that we will be dealing with, both the shilling and interest rates.”

What is the Peter Principle

July - 27 - 2011 Author: Elizabeth Moore Respond

In one line, the Peter Principle can be defined as: “in a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence”. This means that an employee will be promoted and will continue to receive promotions till he reaches a level at which he is found to be incompetent. This means that if a company hires few people at a time, there will be a point at which its top posts will be filled with incompetent employees. This implies two things for a company – that the Peter Principle is an inevitability and that eventually the efficiency of the company drops. One can replace an incompetent employee by a more competent one, but this will again mean that he will keep getting promotions till he is rendered incompetent. Understanding the Principle An explanation for this can be derived from a child (although the Peter Principle is meant for hierarchy). Read more…

Journal parent sees 2Q loss expand

July - 27 - 2011 Author: Zachary Sanchez Respond

DALLAS – A.H. Belo Corp., parent company of The Providence Journal, announced a net loss of $6.8 million for its 2011 second quarter, compared with a loss of $200,000 in the comparable year-earlier period, as advertising revenue fell 9.3 percent across the company, which includes The Dallas Morning News, The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., other niche publications and the associated websites.

Total revenue for the chain fell 5.8 percent to $114.5 million in the three months ended June 30. Advertising revenue totaled $69.9 million for the period across the properties, although Belo said in an earnings release that the percentage decline was smallest for the Journal.

Circulation revenue fell 1.6 percent to $34.9 million, as a 0.4 percent increase at the Morning News was offset by declines at the Journal and Press-Enterprise.

Printing and distribution revenue increased 6.7 percent to $9.7 million, Belo said, largely due to increases at the Journal.
