When a client suggested that Minna Van make cold calls to promote her business, the prospect brought chills. “It’s kind of terrifying,” she says.

In the five years since she and two business partners started The Network Hub in Vancouver, they have actively dodged direct sales.

Fewer than 2 percent of Citigroup cardholders were affected by a security breach last month. But this violation gives all cardholders reason for concern, be it an account with Citigroup or any other U.S. bank. This largest direct attack on a major bank is a sobering reminder of how long overdue the banking industry is for tougher security measures.

On May 10, hackers broke into Citigroups network and managed to access the names, credit card numbers and email addresses of 360,000 cardholders a number revised from the initial report of 200,000. Fortunately, social security numbers, expiration dates and 3-digit security codes were not compromised, the lack of which experts say makes it difficult for hackers to commit fraud.

Though it has not been reported exactly how hackers breached the system, its vulnerability comes as no surprise.
