More federal contracts in sight for local company

CORPUS CHRISTI Harry Lee Chester gets about 8 percent of his orders from out of state. The president of Corpus Christi Stamp Works seeks to expand that part of his business and achieving HUBZone certification will bring him closer to his goal.

A HUBZone, or historically under-utilized business zone, is a designation aimed at helping businesses located in distressed areas, such as those with high unemployment and low incomes.

“Before we got the certification, we didn’t fit in that category, which limited our chances of getting contracts,” said Chester, who received certification on April 12 for his company, which manufactures signs and rubber stamps. “It’s not a cure-all.
