KKR plans to buy Academy Sports

May - 31 - 2011 Author: Zachary Sanchez Respond

— The buyout firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. LP has agreed to buy a majority stake in Academy Sports + Outdoors, a sporting goods retailer with 131 outlets in 11 states in the Southeast.

Terms were not disclosed.

Academy Sports’ president, Rodney Faldyn, will continue as president and assume the CEO job from David Gochman, the grandson of the company’s founder. The Gochman family will keep a minority stake in Academy Sports.

In a statement, Faldyn says the ownership change will speed up the retailer’s continued growth and give it greater flexibility to achieve strategic goals.

The sporting and outdoors goods chain is headquartered in Katy, Texas, outside Houston. One of its stores is located in Corpus Christi.

Steward Health Care emerges as Landmark buyer

May - 27 - 2011 Author: Zachary Sanchez Respond

PROVIDENCE – In a surprising twist, Steward Health Care System emerged as the buyer of the financially troubled Landmark Medical Center, after Superior Court Judge Michael A. Silverstein ruled that none of the other potential bidders were qualified.

The purchase price, according to special master Jonathan N. Savage, is between $62 and $65 million.

Steward, the Boston-based hospital division of Cerberus Capital Management, formerly know as the Caritas Christi Health Care System, previously had been engaged in negotiations to purchase Landmark and its affiliate, the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island. But those negotiations broke off in December 2010.

A hearing is scheduled for May 31, at which time Silverstein is expected to recommend that the Steward be chosen to move ahead with the next phase of the purchase agreement, compliance with the state Hospital Conversion Act.

The tentative agreement with Steward came about because of the intervention of Local 5067, the Northern Rhode Island Nurses and Allied Professionals, which represents about 600 workers at the two facilities, according to Savage. <

Sales People and Support People

May - 21 - 2011 Author: Samantha Davis Respond

Good people are hard to find, the saying goes. For example, by the year 2000 over 190,000 computer programmer and other information technology jobs will be vacant, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report. (This is now a bit out of date, and although the dot-com bustups and the 2000-2001 recession has eased things a bit, it is still difficult to lure top talent.) It may be easy to fill these empty positions if you are a software giant like Microsoft, but there is a tremendous challenge attracting (and keeping) top performers if you are smaller and less well known.

According to chief executives and industry recruiters who were interviewed for this article, there are three main areas on which to focus: the quality and market position of your product or service, environment, and compensation.

Leading edge technology and a high perception of quality will lure top technical and design people, salespeople and support people, all for different reasons.
