Hire an Enrolled Agent to Protect Your Rights During a Tax Audit

February - 28 - 2011 Author: Samantha Davis Respond

Many believe it is almost impossible to go through a tax audit without experiencing some sort of trauma or another form of ordeal. However, you can help yourself by hiring an enrolled agent (EA) to represent you during a tax audit. An enrolled agent is a government-certified professional duly authorized to represent taxpayers, whether an individual or a business entity, in dealing and negotiating with the IRS with regard to payments, collections, and tax audits.

There are two instances when you may be subjected to a tax audit: (1) if the IRS noted irregularities in your previous returns and past payments or (2) if you were randomly picked for review by the IRS computer system. Sakonnet Vineyards in Little Compton reduces asking price to $8.9 million

February - 26 - 2011 Author: Zachary Sanchez Respond

LITTLE COMPTON – In an effort to sell the 35-year-old Sakonnet Vineyards, its owners have reduced its price to $8.9 million and launched a national marketing campaign.

Vineyard owner Earl Samson told Providence Business News he and his wife, Susan, have decided it is time to retire after 23 years of running the business they purchased in 1987.

The couple, in their 70s, initially listed the business, vineyard and adjoining coastal land in May 2010 for $10.5 million, hoping to sell the 170-acre property quietly.

But Samson said no buyer emerged and the owners decided to reduce the price and step up advertising. On Friday, an advertisement for the vineyard appeared in the Wall Street Journal.

Samson said the couple is ready to retire.

“I doubt we’ll ever leave Little Compton but we’ve been at this for almost 25 years and it’s time for new energy, a new approach,” Samson said.

A buyer, Samson said, would have limited options for the vineyard part of the land, which covers about 100 acres. The local c

February - 24 - 2011 Author: Zachary Sanchez Respond

— Citgo Refining and Chemicals Co., which operates two refineries in Corpus Christi, received a $303,294 fine from TCEQ for water and air violations from a 2009 fire.

The incident caused injuries to more than 60 percent of employee Gabriel Alvarado’s body and also is being investigated by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board.

Alvarado, then 34, was working near the alkylation unit on July 19, 2009, when the fire ignited. Alkylation is a key aspect of refining petroleum, and Citgo uses hydrogen fluoride, a strong irritant, in that process.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality found four water violations and two air violations during an investigation conducted July 19 through Aug. 11, 2009, and July 19 through Dec. 18, 2009. I
