Shops, beaches perk up waves of prosperity

PORT ARANSAS — PTourists come to Port Aransas for its beaches, but they keep coming back for its variety of businesses, local officials say.

Staycations, or staying close to home for vacation, have become popular, even with the affluent. Port Aransas has capitalized on it by encouraging new businesses to open, such as Coffee Waves, Bam Bam Artwares and Beach Bum Antiques.

Ann Vaughn, executive director of the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce, said a strong business base has helped attract the tourists in the summer and the winter Texans in the winter to the town of 3,900 people.

“Businesses pop up to meet the needs of the consumer, whether their products or services cater to the locals or the tourists,” Vaughn said. “We’ve had more and more restaurants open and stay open. That’s saying something since we don’t have a huge population to support these on our own.”

Wage Freeze

President Obama announced a wage freeze for federal employees this morning. If approved by congress, President Obama’s wage freeze would save $60 billion over ten years, $28 billion over five years and $5 billion over the next two; the freeze will initially last 2 years. While debts remain at historic highs, it is expected that the deficit will surpass $9 trillion in the next 10 years. The government realizes they need to get the mounting debts under control and this is the first out of many drastic changes the government is about to make. Those who will be affected by the wage freezes will be all civilian federal employees, including employees of the Department of Defense. Read more…

Herreshoff Marine Museum appoints Dyer Jones new CEO

BRISTOL – The Herreshoff Marine Museum – also home to the America’s Cup Hall of Fame – has appointed Dyer Jones as its new CEO.

Jones will take over for Halsey Herreshoff, son of museum founders A. Sidney DeWolf and Rebecca Chase Herreshoff. Halsey Herreshoff ran the museum for the past 40 years. Following his induction into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame, he elected to step down as president but remain as a trustee through the end of the his term, the museum said in a news release on Nov. 24.

“The challenge in taking on this role will be to build on the momentum that has been created by the founders of the Herreshoff Marine Museum,” said Jones, whose primary focus as CEO will be external relations and fundraising. “We must continue to preserve the legacy of the Herreshoff family, while working to move the institution forward.”
